Welcome Home strives to provide families experiencing hardship with basic household items they need to live with dignity. We are a local nonprofit in Newton, MA, that collects and redistributes like-new household items to people in need each month with no fees, no forms and no requirements. The organization assists hundreds of clients each month by providing much needed kitchen, dining, bedding, and other home goods. The new facility affords Welcome Home the space to accept more donated home goods — more than 200 boxes each month — as homeowners and renters clear out items they no longer use. Donations often come from decluttering projects, attic clean-outs, seniors downsizing, and families moving. Drop-off days are currently Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday with a reservation and any items Welcome Home can’t use are repurposed, recycled, or donated to agencies like homeless shelters and animal rescues. Through these partnerships Welcome Home supplies basic home goods for veterans’ residences and maintains a presence at the Newton Food Pantry, among other ventures. The organization’s 80-plus volunteers — women, men, and children — unload, sort, organize, and repack donations to keep the location stocked. With demand soundly outpacing capacity, Welcome Home currently has an eight-week waiting list for client appointments to receive goods, but continues to welcome donations. “Stuff goes out as quickly as it comes in,” Plaut Mahoney said. Previously housed in a 250 square foot space, the move has significantly increased the nonprofit’s capacity to serve the needs of the community. As a private nonprofit organization, Welcome Home requires no proof of need from clients, unlike many governmental agencies.
Welcome Home was founded by Julie Plaut Mahoney, who saw an opportunity to bridge the gap between older adults downsizing by purging usable home goods, and families in need. Our staff members follow proper hand hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment. Annually and as needed, all staff are re-educated in these topics.

Since March 2020, all staff members screen themselves every day to prevent the spread of COVID-19. These are the same questions we are asking you before every visit. We follow infection control procedures set forth by CDC, CMS, state and local health departments.

After more than three years in a 250-square-foot space in Newton Centre’s Trinity Church, Welcome Home relocated to a 1,600-square-foot space that formerly housed Newton Fire and Flood on Washington Street in West Newton. According to the guidelines to limit person to person contact significantly in an effort to help protect our patients from possible exposure to this virus. As such, we encourage families to establish alternate ways of communicating with our residents, such as by telephone, texting, video conferencing or other means. We understand family members are an integral part of our patient lives and encourage any family members with concerns or questions about these limitations to call to our office for more information.
Basic items like linens and dishes are pre-packed for clients to pick up at their arranged appointment, during which they can also pick from the new rooms on-site. Welcome Home, Inc., a nonprofit eco-friendly organization in Newton Centre, collects and redistributes household items to dozens of people in need each month with no fees, no forms and no requirements. Our volunteers sort, shelve and prepare items for distribution. Any items that we cannot use are repurposed or recycled appropriately.
